Teeth Whitening: Do It Right

Kelowna dentist teeth whitening

As the years go by, our teeth naturally lose their luster. Dark colored foods and drinks speed up the process, but even people who avoid coffee, wine and cola are not immune to yellow or gray teeth. Want to brighten up your smile? Have you considered tooth whitening? Teeth whitening at Choose Your Smile – Dr. Stephen Malfair is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to look younger and more attractive.

Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

Though some Choose Your Smile – Dr. Stephen Malfair teeth whitening patients experience a little short-term sensitivity, most experience no pain at all.

There are several different methods for whitening teeth but each uses a solution containing peroxide to remove the stains that have accumulated in the microscopic cracks in your tooth enamel.

DIY Whitening Products
First of all, the strips, mouthwashes and paint-on whiteners use a lower concentration of whitening agent than in-office methods. They rarely remove all of the stains on your enamel. If you have gum disease, cavities, crowns, dental bonding, or porcelain veneers, Dr. Stephen Malfair recommends first visiting your dentist for a teeth whitening consultation. You are always better off having teeth whitening performed by a professional. This will protect your existing restorations and ensure the best possible results.

Don’t assume that tooth whitening offered at Kelowna mall kiosks is risk-free. The industry is largely unregulated and the staff often have little dental training. Do you really want to take chances with your smile?

At Choose Your Smile – Dr. Stephen Malfair, we are currently accepting new patients at our Kelowna office. My friendly team of skilled dental professionals would love to serve you with Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Implants, Sedation Dentistry, Teeth Whitening, or Porcelain Veneers. You can schedule an appointment by calling 778-478-3693.

We work hard to exceed your expectations.

Teeth Whitening at Your Kelowna Dentist

teeth whitening dentistTeeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to improve your smile. It is quick, cost-effective, and noninvasive. Though some cosmetic dentistry patients experience short-term sensitivity, most experience no tooth whitening pain at all.

If you have looked into teeth whitening, you probably already know the basics. The one thing they have in common is that they use a solution containing peroxide to remove the stains that have settled in the natural microscopic cracks in your tooth enamel.

There are many DIY teeth bleaching products available, and it seems like new ones appear every time you visit the toothpaste aisle at your drug store.

These tooth whitening strips and tooth whitening pens can sometimes whiten your teeth a few shades, but the peroxide concentration is much lower than the whitening solutions used in cosmetic dental offices. It may not be strong enough for your tooth stains.

Tooth whitening offered at mall kiosks is risky, also. Most of these teeth whitening businesses have no professional oversight and the employees have little dental training. (Except instruction on how to take advantage of customer naivety.)

Dr. Stephen Malfair recommends that you use extreme caution when considering a take-home tooth whitener. If you have tooth decay, gum recession, crowns, or veneers, you definitely need professional guidance.

The portion of your teeth below the gumline, if exposed, may respond differently to tooth whitener. Additionally, the peroxide solution does not noticeably whiten crowns and veneers. If you use a DIY tooth whitener on teeth with extensive porcelain restorations, you should probably hope it doesn’t whiten too much – you may end up with a two- or three-tone smile!

Schedule a tooth bleaching evaluation before you waste your cash on more Crest White Strips. We can be reached at 778-478-3693.

Everything you Need to Know About Zoom Teeth Whitening

People are attracted to brighter, whiter smiles. Sometimes brushing your teeth and using mouthwash twice a day doesn’t cut it. Foods that we enjoy such as red wine, cranberries, tea, and coffee, can have an impact on the whiteness of our smiles. Our teeth are even susceptible to yellowing through aging. One way you can bring back that pearly white smile is through Zoom Teeth Whitening. We can professionally whiten your teeth for you using our special methods in a safe and effective way.

Zoom Whitening is the fastest and safest way to brighten your smile. You can buy over the counter products to help whiten, but they may not be safe for your teeth. For example, whitening trays can fit poorly over your teeth and causes problems for your gums in the future. They may not be as effective as you hope either.

Before you go have your procedure, we recommend that we conduct a teeth cleaning for you so there is not calculus or plaque covering parts of the teeth. After the cleaning, the entire process takes around 90 minutes. We will prep your gums and widen your mouth with holds to help expose your teeth. After you are comfortable with everything in place, we will apply the whitening gel to your teeth. We will then take a special light and hold it pointed at your teeth for 15 minutes to activate the whitening gel. We repeat this process 3 or 4 times. Afterwards we’ll apply a fluoride paste-gel that will work to reduce any sensitivity you may have.

To keep a bright looking smile after Zoom Whitening, do your best to maintain healthy oral hygiene, and try to avoid foods that stain teeth (like the ones mentioned above). Smoking will also cause yellowing in the teeth! This doesn’t mean that you can’t have your favourite red wine, just try to enjoy it in moderation.

We will often recommend you toothpastes that reduce sensitivity and also help keep your teeth looking white. This all depends on your smile!

If you think that Zoom Teeth Whitening is for you, or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

3 Ways to Get a Whiter Smile

Everyone loves a beautiful smile and whitening your teeth can have a big impact on your appearance. There are easy ways to ensure that you get the pearly smile of your dreams.

  1. Change out Your Toothbrush : it is important to replace your toothbrush every three months. It is surprising how easy it is for your bristles to bend and wear down. When your toothbrush isn’t in working condition, how can you expect it to do its job? Generally after 3 months, your brush are much less effective at removing plaque from teeth and gums compared to new ones. It must also be noted that you should change your toothbrushes after you’ve had a cold, the flu, a mouth infection or a sore throat. That’s because germs can hide in toothbrush bristles and lead to reinfection.
  2. Make sure that you are brushing at least twice a day as well as flossing. This ensures that plaque from your food doesn’t build up on your teeth. Plaque can create staining and discolouration. If you really want to keep your teeth white, brush after every major meal.
  3. Get Professional Whitening : yes home whitening strips are effective, but if you want safe and guaranteed results, talk to your dentist. There are two options to help you get that youthful, white smile: veneers/crowns or whitening agents.
    • Veneers are perfect for people who are resistant to whitening agents who still want whiter teeth.
    • Whitening agents such as Zoom whitening, in office whitening and at home tray whitening are effective. Your dentist will provide you with the best option for your budget and sensitivity.

You can safely and effectively change the look of your smile with a whiter and brighter smile. Make sure to talk to your dentist to ensure that you are making the right choice.
