Clear braces are sometimes called invisible braces. The proper name for them is “aligners.” They look a lot like an athlete’s mouth guard. You wear a series of them to put pressure on your teeth, which is what brings them into alignment. Each set of aligners is worn from one to two weeks before you go to a new set. The new set changes the alignment slightly, so that in time, you have an ideal bite.
To get the best results from clear braces, they must be worn for at least twenty-two hours each day, although that time may vary slightly from one patient to the next. The total number of aligners each patient needs varies, too.
Some of the benefits of clear braces:
- They’re inconspicuous. People standing just a few feet away from you may not even realize you’re wearing them.
- They are removeable. As noted, they must be worn most of the time. But you can take them out for meals and for flossing and brushing before bed.
- No metal in your mouth!
Remember, the goal of aligners, or any braces for that matter, is to ensure your top and bottom teeth fit together properly. It may be tempting to remove them sometimes, but it is in your best interest to wear your aligners for the recommended time. That usually includes while you sleep.
