Sinus Lifts & Sinus Bumps in Kelowna

If you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for dental implants in the upper jaw, a sinus lift (sometimes called a sinus bump, or sinus grafting) may make treatment possible. Dr. Malfair provides clear, evidence-based guidance to help you understand whether sinus lifting is needed — and whether it’s the right step for your implant plan.

Evidence-Based Conservative Planning

What Is a Sinus Lift (or Sinus Bump)?

A sinus lift is a procedure that gently creates space between the upper jawbone and the sinus cavity so that dental implants can be placed safely. Bone graft material is added to increase bone height and provide stable support for implants.

A sinus bump (also called a crestal sinus lift) is a smaller, less invasive version of this procedure used when only a small amount of additional bone is needed.

These procedures are only recommended when imaging shows they’re truly necessary.

Free second-opinion consultations are always available at our clinic.

Sinus Lift Process Illustration
  • Are missing upper back teeth
  • Have been told you “don’t have enough bone” for implants
  • Have worn dentures for many years
  • Experienced bone loss after extractions
  • Want a long-term implant solution rather than removable options

Not every patient needs a sinus lift — and many are surprised to learn they don’t once proper imaging is done. Dr. Malfair uses on-site 3D CT scanning to evaluate:

  • Bone height and density
  • Sinus position and shape
  • Implant placement options
  • Whether grafting can be avoided

This allows for careful planning and often more conservative solutions than patients expect.

Sinus Bump (Crestial Lift)

  • Used when a small amount of bone height is missing
  • Less invasive
  • Often performed at the same time as implant placement
  • Shorter healing time

Traditional Sinus Lift

  • Used when more bone support is needed
  • Bone graft placed beneath the sinus membrane
  • Implant placement may be delayed until healing is complete
  • Allows implants in areas previously considered unsuitable

During your consultation, we’ll explain which option applies to you, and why, in clear, simple terms.

The Sinus Lift Process: What to Expect

Dr. Stephen Malfair, a skilled dentist with decades of experience and extensive training in dental implants and oral surgery, will handle your treatment from start to finish. Minor sinus bumps can often be done the same day as implant placement. Larger sinus lifts usually require a healing period before implants are placed. We’ll walk you through your timeline clearly before any treatment begins.

Consultation & 3D CT Scan

You'll meet with Dr. Malfair for a review your goals, dental history, and anatomy. We'll use detailed 3D imaging to assess bone health and discuss your options, with no pressure. We'll determine whether a sinus bump or lift is needed — or if implants can proceed without grafting.

Grafting Procedure

Bone graft material is placed gently beneath the sinus membrane using guided techniques. This is typically done under local anesthetic oral and IV sedation options are available.

Healing & Integration

The graft naturally integrates with your jawbone (a process called osseointegration).

Implant Placement & Support

Once healed (or immediately, in some cases), implants are placed with long-term stability in mind, and we provide post-procedure support to ensure long-term success.

Advanced Technology for Precise Planning

All sinus-related implant planning is supported by on-site CBCT (3D CT) imaging, allowing for:

  • Precise sinus mapping
  • Reduced surgical risk
  • Conservative treatment planning
  • Predictable long-term outcomes

Dr. Malfair has used guided implant planning for more than a decade to support hundreds of successful cases in Kelowna.

Sedation Options for a Comfortable Experience

Most patients tolerate sinus lift procedures very well. Local anesthetic is typically sufficient, and oral and IV sedation options are available for those who feel anxious.

Dr. Malfair served on the BC Dental College Sedation Committee (2017–2020), helping shape provincial safety standards. His background ensures a calm, supportive experience for every patient.

If anxiety has held you back, we can discuss sedation at your consultation.

Sinus Grafting FAQs

Most patients report mild discomfort that’s easily managed with medication. Sedation options are available if needed.

Healing typically takes several months, depending on the type of graft and individual bone response.

In some cases, yes — especially with sinus bumps. We’ll explain what’s appropriate for your anatomy.

When planned with 3D imaging and performed carefully, sinus lifts are a well-established and predictable procedure.

No. Many patients do not. Imaging allows us to avoid unnecessary grafting whenever possible.
