What’s Included in Your Dental Cleaning Appointment

Your visit begins with one of our experienced hygienists, followed by a comprehensive exam with Dr. Stephen Malfair. Together, we ensure your teeth and gums are thoroughly cleaned, carefully assessed, and supported with clear, personalized recommendations. Here’s what you can expect:

Dental Exams & X-Rays

Every appointment includes a detailed assessment of your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. Dr. Malfair evaluates for signs of decay, gum disease, bite concerns, cavities, and changes in your oral health. When needed, we use digital radiographs (x-rays) to capture clear images with significantly lower radiation exposure, allowing for accurate diagnosis and early detection. Your exam also includes an oral cancer screening, where we carefully assess the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, and surrounding tissues for any concerning changes. Your hygienist will also examine the health of your gums, including measuring the depth of the gum pockets for any early indicators of gum disease.

Scaling & Polishing

Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing alone can’t reach. Using modern ultrasonic scalers and air abrasion technology, we gently remove buildup above and below the gumline to help prevent cavities and gum disease. Your teeth are then polished to smooth the surface, reduce staining, and leave your smile feeling fresh and clean. Our techniques focus on comfort, efficiency, and protecting your healthy enamel.

Consultation & Personalized Preventative Plan

Before you leave, we review your oral health findings and provide clear, tailored recommendations based on your history, risk factors, and long-term goals.
This may include guidance on home care, nutritional counselling, fluoride treatments, sealants, or periodontal maintenance. Our goal is to give you a proactive plan that keeps your smile healthy and predictable over time.

New patients receive a comprehensive 90-minute first visit. During this appointment, Dr. Stephen Malfair thoroughly assesses your oral health, evaluates risk factors over time, and develops a personalized treatment plan designed to protect your smile well into the future.

Additional Preventative Services

At Dr. Malfair Dental, our preventative dentistry services go above and beyond routine check-ups and cleanings to ensure your smile is well-cared for - from specialized treatments to nutritional counselling. Here are some of our additional preventative services:

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities. During your visit, we can apply fluoride treatments to give your teeth an extra layer of protection.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are thin, clear protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent cavities by filling in the crevasses where food tends to get caught. We can optionally apply this liquid sealant to your teeth during your cleaning appointment.

Periodontal Care

Preventative care also includes maintaining healthy gums. Regular cleanings help prevent gum disease, and we offer additional treatments if needed to restore your gum health, including gum disease treatment.

Nutritional Consultations

What you eat affects your oral health. We provide guidance on how to make dietary choices that support strong teeth and gums, helping you avoid sugary and acidic foods that can lead to decay and erosion.

Dental Hygiene FAQs

For most patients, we recommend a professional dental cleaning every six months to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Regular visits allow us to monitor changes in your oral health and address small concerns before they become more serious. If you are managing gum or periodontal disease, we may suggest more frequent hygiene appointments (typically every three to four months) to keep your gums stable and prevent progression. Your recommended schedule will always be tailored to your individual oral health needs.

At Dr. Malfair Dental, our treatment fees follow the current British Columbia Dental Association Fee Guide, ensuring fair and transparent pricing for all patients. The cost of a cleaning and check-up can vary depending on your specific needs, including exams, digital X-rays, scaling time, and periodontal assessments. We’re always happy to provide an estimate before your appointment so you know what to expect. Preventative care is one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain your oral health and avoid more extensive treatment in the future.

A routine dental cleaning typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the amount of buildup and whether X-rays or a full exam are needed during your visit. If deeper scaling or periodontal care is required, your hygienist may allow additional time to ensure your cleaning is thorough and comfortable. In general, the healthier your teeth and gums, the quicker and simpler your appointment will be.

For most patients, dental cleanings are comfortable, especially when visits are kept regular. If there is inflammation, gum disease, or heavier buildup below the gumline, you may experience some temporary sensitivity. Our hygienists use gentle techniques along with modern tools like ultrasonic scalers and air abrasion to make your cleaning more comfortable and efficient. If needed, we also offer numbing options to minimize discomfort. For patients with dental anxiety, sensitive teeth, or strong gag reflexes, we provide safe oral and IV sedation options to help you feel relaxed throughout your visit.

In many cases, yes. Most dental insurance plans cover routine cleanings and check-ups, often every six months. At Dr. Malfair Dental, we accept most major insurance providers and are happy to help you understand your coverage. Simply bring your insurance details to your appointment, and our team will assist you. We are a non-assigned office, which means we submit your claim electronically on your behalf, but payment is due at the time of service. Your insurance provider will reimburse you directly. We’re also happy to submit pre-authorizations if needed. If you have questions about your benefits before booking, just give us a call — we’re here to help.

Regular dental cleanings help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues by removing plaque and tartar that brushing alone can’t reach. During your exam, we can also detect small concerns early — often before you notice symptoms. Maintaining routine hygiene visits not only protects your smile, but can also help you avoid more complex and costly treatment in the future.

Many dental clinics in Kelowna are currently booking cleanings months in advance. At Dr. Malfair Dental, we’ve built a strong hygiene team so we can offer timely appointments when you need them. If you’ve been waiting elsewhere, we’re here to help.
