What is Dental Bonding (and who is it for)?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic and restorative treatment that uses a tooth-coloured resin to repair, reshape, or enhance a tooth. The material is applied while soft, carefully shaped, and then hardened with a special light, allowing it to bond securely to the tooth and blend naturally with your smile.

Dental bonding is a conservative option that preserves natural tooth structure and is often completed in a single visit. It may be a good choice if you:

  • Have a chipped, cracked, or worn tooth
  • Want to close small gaps between teeth
  • Have mild discolouration that whitening won’t correct
  • Want to slightly reshape or lengthen a tooth
  • Have exposed tooth roots due to gum recession
  • Prefer a less invasive cosmetic solution

Bonding works best for small to moderate cosmetic concerns, and is often used on its own or as part of a broader cosmetic plan like a smile design.

During your consultation, we’ll help you understand whether bonding, veneers, or another treatment will provide the most predictable and long-lasting result for your smile.

Your Dental Bonding Appointment: What to Expect

Dr. Stephen Malfair, a skilled dentist with decades of experience, will handle your treatment from start to finish. Bonding is is one of the most gentle and efficient cosmetic treatments we offer, and is typically completed in a single visit.

Consultation & Shade Matching

We assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and confirm whether bonding is the right solution. If it is, we carefully select a composite shade that blends naturally with your surrounding teeth.

Gentle Tooth Preparation

Very little preparation is needed. In most cases, the tooth surface is lightly conditioned so the bonding material adheres securely. This is often done without freezing, but numbing and sedation options are available for improved comfort, or for those with dental anxiety.

Bonding & Shaping

The composite resin is applied in layers, then gently shaped to restore the tooth’s natural contour, length, or edge. Dr. Malfair takes time to refine the details so the result looks balanced and natural.

Curing & Polishing

A special light hardens the material, and the tooth is polished to a smooth finish that matches the sheen of natural enamel. You’ll be able to see the improvement right away. There’s little to no downtime, so you can return to your normal routine the same day.

Dental Bonding FAQs

With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, bonding can last several years. Because it’s a resin material, it can chip or stain over time — especially with habits like nail-biting or frequent consumption of coffee or red wine. If bonding wears or chips, it can usually be repaired or refreshed.

Bonding is usually painless and often doesn’t require freezing. Most patients find it very comfortable.

Cost depends on the size and number of areas being treated. We provide clear estimates and follow the BC Dental Association Fee Guide.

Bonding material does not whiten. If whitening is planned, it’s best to do that first so the bonding can be colour-matched afterward.

Bonding is long-lasting but not permanent. It may need maintenance or replacement over time.

For larger issues, veneers or crowns may offer a more durable solution. We’ll help you decide.
